Living The American Dream: From Street Hooker To Congresswoman, Nancy Mace Proves That Anything Is Possible In This Country

WASHINGTON, D.C. - During last Thursday’s Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing, Congresswoman Nancy Mace slammed Vanderbilt professor Michael Eric Dyson for hitting on her over text message after her recent CNN interview.

While Rep. Mace’s remarks were a sobering reminder of the struggles women still face in the workplace, it wasn’t that long ago that she was trying to defend her pride and self-worth on the street.

In 2005, Nancy was a regular sight on Main Street in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. Not for canvassing voters, but for canvassing lonely men for sex.

“I used to do anything for $20,” she told The Gas Lamp in an exclusive interview. “And when I say anything I mean a- ny- thing. Listen, I was the best escort in town. But I’m not ashamed of what I did. I did it to get by, and I was damn good at it. It’s why I still wear blue eye shadow and low cut tops - to give these stiffs in Congress a stiff from time to time and remind them who they’re dealing with.”

From the streets of Charlotte to Washington, D.C., Nancy’s ambition has always far surpassed those around her - never letting bumps in the road, long and hard obstacles, or the foul stench of injustice get in her way.

Finally in 2016, after nearly 11 years of prostituting herself, she saved up enough money to quit the industry and move to Charleston, South Carolina to build a new life.

It was there she ran into a longtime former client, Ted Johnson, who was then head of the South Carolina GOP. Remembering how well she served him in Charlotte, and how strong of a grip she had on the issues at hand, Johnson knew she was perfect for the 99th State House district and helped get her campaign off the ground. According to staffers, Johnson and Mace would spend hours in the back of their cars or at hotels around town, swapping lines for campaign speeches and hammering down on each other’s thoughts on policy, just like they did in the old days.

All those long, sweaty nights proved to be integral to Nancy’s political career as she would go onto win her State House race a year later and eventually made her a prime candidate for the metaphorical casting couch of Congress in 2018.

Now, four years since she first made the pitch to South Carolina voters that she was more than a Citadel call-girl, Mace has cemented herself as a leading voice in our nation’s capital. And despite the privileges that come with leading our country, the two-term congresswoman has not forgotten her roots.

“I really want my story to serve as a reminder to young girls across the country that you’re just one backseat hand job away from becoming a Congresswoman or a CEO.” Mace concluded.

Mace currently leads Democrat Michael B. Moore by 12 points in her reelection bid for South Carolina’s 1st district. But even if she loses, her story of cum rags to riches will go down in history as proof that anyone can make something of themselves in the United States of America.
